Buonconvento, Via Dante Alighieri 1.
Buonconvento is located along the Via Cassia (SS2) halfway between Siena and the Val d'Orcia. Along a flat stretch of the Via Cassia, near the confluence between the rivers Arbia and Ombrone this town shows signs of an intense medieval past. Here it was the urban stretch of the Via Francigena and here travelers interrupted their journey to take lodging and refreshment.
Enclosed in a circuit of strong defense walls built in red bricks by the Sienese in 1371 and still largely intact, Buonconvento preserves its monumental northern gate Porta Senese toward Siena, many corner tower and the Guelf battlements of the watch walkway. There are many historical buildings including the Palazzo Podestarile with a façade showing 25 coats of arms of the ancient podestà, the civic tower, the town hall, the Palazzo Borghesi as well as the beautiful examples of the Art Nouveau like Palazzo Ricci-Socini, Palazzo Ricci, l’ex Asilo infantile Grisaldi del Tajai.
The Museum of Val d’Arbia sacred Art and the Museum of sharecropping are really worth a visit.
